Some investments are better than others. It appears that investing in a new soccer complex is going to pay off for Gonzaga University. The Zags defeated the Broncos of Santa Clara 2-1 in overtime today at Gonzaga Soccer Field.
The Broncos, who began the season as the fifth ranked team in the country, had the only goal for the first 80 minutes of the match. Kellen Wantulok connected on a cross from Connor Mitchell to put SCU on the board in the 43rd minute. The game would stay at the score until the 81st minute when Mitchell Weller netted a Gonzaga goal thanks to a beautiful assist by Ben Funkhouser. The Zags had all the momentum heading into overtime and made sure the extra session didn't last long. Funkhouser ended Santa Clara's hopes in the 98th minute as he ripped a low shot into the back of the net.
Gonzaga outshot the Broncos 15-9 and Zags keeper Scott Barnum only had to make two saves. Three yellow cards were given out by the refs and their were 29 total fouls. It was a huge day for Gonzaga soccer as they move to 6-4-1 on the season and pick up a solid conference victory.
If you haven't been out to a game at Gonzaga Soccer Field, check TKR's calendar on the sidebar and get out there and support the guys.
