Post Election Zag Tracks

I'm not a political person by any stretch of the imagination and last night was the first time I even really paid attention to the election but now I can't get that "Yes, We Can" phrase out of my head. Heck, it might even be a good slogan for Gonzaga this season. Is there any chance that a team from the mid-major ranks can win a national title? YES, the Zags can! Kind of catchy isn't it?

The amount of Gonzaga news is extraordinarily slim as we approach the start of the regular season. The major pundits have put out their top-25's and now we are all waiting...

--Did I say the major polls have been released? Well, now they have. In a very entertaining read, this blog puts out their top 25 teams for the college basketball season. Gonzaga is ranked as ten but they are curiously tied with Purdue for this spot. This is hilarious.

-- Gonzaga will be taking on the University of Texas in a scrimmage in my native state of Colorado this weekend. The Zags and Horns will scrimmage twice at Thunderidge High School, the Alma mater of junior guard Matt Bouldin. The scrimmage is locked and sealed to the general public but hopefully we can get some sort of recap on what should be a very nice match up. Andy Katz has a pretty good connection with both of these programs so look for Katz to maybe leak some info, otherwise it looks like there will be little news out of Colorado this weekend.

-- In general basketball news, it appears that Jai Lucas, the promising point guard for the Florida Gators is transferring. This is shocking news to me as Lucas showed tons of skill last season for Billy Donovan's squad. This appears to be a playing time issue as he was in some serious competition for the starting point guard spot and Florida secured a top point guard in the 2009 class in Kenny Boynton.

-- Recruiting news is pretty sparse these days but the good news is that Cole Stefan's visit is approaching. Stefan, who is starting to blow up on a national level, will be at the Kennel when the Zags take on Idaho on November 18th. Hopefully the Kennel Club can give him plenty of attention. He's one hell of a shooter and his coach Marquise Watts said that his skills are much like that of Sam Dower, in that they are only beginning to blossom. Stefan is a TKR favorite and we are hoping that Mark Few can keep the Minnesota pipeline going strong. We encourage you to scroll down a bit and check out our Recruiting Prospects section the sidebar to learn more about potential recruits.

-- November is a busy month for Gonzaga athletics in general. The Men's Soccer team has a huge game this Friday at 1 pm against the University of San Diego. If the Zags could somehow win this game, they should be able to get a birth into the NCAA tournament. Thanks to the emergence of new scorers, including Nick Love, the guys have taken it to the WCC in the past few matches. The game is at Gonzaga Soccer Field so take a late lunch and head out to campus to watch the Zags take on the Toreros. The men play a very exciting brand of soccer and they will be going all out to defeat USD and extend their season.

-- It's a tough life to be on the men's golf team. While the majority of students are freezing in the recent cold wave going through Spokane, the men's golf team is living it up in Hawaii. Gonzaga is currently tied for eighth in the Kaua'i Collegiate International. Senior Bowdy Ehler is in 9th place heading in to today's final 18 holes. The Zags golf team was tied for 3rd afte the first 18 holes but fell to 8th after a tough 18 to close out the first day of competition. The guys began their final round about three hours ago and we'll keep up to date as they finish.

As always, keep checking out the calendar on the sidebar to see if Gonzaga action is near you and get out and support the Zags!
