After a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Washington State University, the volleyball team will seek some home court advantage this weekend when they host the Gonzaga Volleyball Tournament. The tournament will be the home debut for the volleyball team this season, and it should provide the team with an excellent chance to improve on their 2-6 record.
Joining the Bulldogs in the Gonzaga Volleyball Tournament will be, UTEP, San Diego State, and Weber State. The first opponent for the Lady Zags is the UTEP Miners. The Miners enter the tournament with a 2-5 record, after going 1-2 in the Doublewood Inn Classic this past weekend. The Miners are led by the attacking duo of Catherine Chavez and Amy Sanders. Both girls average over 3.00 kills per set, and are the focal point of the Miners offense.
For the Bulldogs to be successful, they must continue to get terrific play from Layne Brosky and Elaina Renius. Both girls were tremendous against Washington State, and need to build on their great play throughout the tournament. One girl who has been consistently excellent this season is freshman setter Denise Van De Mortel. Against WSU, Van De Mortel recorded the first double-double of her career, when she recorded 65 assists and 18 kills.
The Lady Zags will begin the tournament at 7:00 PM on Friday night. This will be the first chance for GU students to see the volleyball team this season, and TKR would love for all the fans to join us at the game on Friday night. They will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM, when the San Diego State Aztecs will be the opponent. Finally, the tournament will conclude Saturday night, when the ladies will be looking for a win against the Weber State University Wildcats.
